This is my Dad's mother's family. I was born in Salisbury, NC and my father Donald Henry Lomax was born in Boone Township in Davidson County , North Carolina. He was a family doctor in Salisbury for May decades.

Thank you. I was wondering what year the photograph above dates from. If you know.

There was no date but it was contributed by Patrick Lengyel in 2021. I do not know him, his ancestry profile says he lives in Canada

In reference to the photograph in your article. It is an interesting family photo, and I'm sure that it is authentic as a historic family photograph, however it seems a bit more recent than 1827, as that is the date on record of Barney Young's death. Photographs were very primitive in their earliest stages and that one seems to have the quality of a later photograph. I could certainly be incorrect about that, but it might be worth researching.

Our family has found records that Barney was born in Rowan County in 1777 and his parents Johan Jung and Anna came down from Pennsylvania, but were both born in Katzenbach in the Palatinate in Germany before immigrating to Philadelphia. So, I was born in the same area where my family has lived for over 200 years.

A slight correction on my part,... Johan and Anna apparently died in Pennsylvania. Barney Young, my ancestor who was Johan and Anna's son was in Salisbury in Rowan County in North Carolina by 1777 and he spent the rest of his days there. I have many cousins in Rowan and Davidson Counties. Most of whom I don't know. My father, Donald Henry Lomax, who's mother was a Young, took us to the Young Reunion when I was a child in Churchland in Davidson County where he was born. It is not far from Salisbury. I do not know if that reunion still exists at this time. It might. It's a large, extended family group. Many people whom I grew up with and knew are related to each other through ties that go back to the 1700's and 1800's in our area. There are many newcomers now, but there is still a large bedrock of these old families still there living in the Yadkin River Basin. Most people are of English, German and Scots Irish descent. The large number of families of German descent came down from Pennsylvania in the 1700's from Pennsylvania and were part of the migration wave that became "Bethabara", which was part of the Moravian settlement centered in what is now Winston Salem. They also settled and built Old Salem which we all knew from childhood school trips growing up in the Piedmont area. Thank you for allowing me to add my experience to this. I have lived in Asheville, North Carolina now for nearly 30 years. I am 60 this year, and I have six siblings. Larger families seem to be a tradition in ours. John Riddick Lomax

I did not know about Old Salem, thanks for all the new information! Large families is a tradition in my husband's line as well. His mother was the youngest of 8. He only had 2 sisters though.

Thank you so much for this information. Susannah Young is my3 X great grandmother on my father's side. Of course this makes her parents my 4X great grandparents and Minvera Catherine Swicegood parents are John Adam Swicegood and Mary Catherine Beck. They gave the land for the church and cemetery in 1790, Where her husband is buried. It is Sandy Creek Cemetery. Thank you so much for this picture. One of the two women in it is Susannah. I am beyond thrilled to see this
