We always thought that the Ketchum/Ketcham's were of Southern heritage, and some generations were. The first two generations of Ketchams (then spelled with an "a") immigrated to America from County Kent, England in 1629, first to Massachusetts, Connecticut and then to Long Island. Edward and John moved to Southold, Long Island, John then moved to Setauket then to Newtown. Subsequent generations migrated south. You may read each person's history by clicking here: Ketcham History
This book tells the history of Newtown, in the early colonial years and documents John Ketcham's involvement in the development and government of Newtown. Newtown is more well-known today as Elmhurst. One of the most important duties John was involved in was representing the English when the Dutch invaded New York in 1673. John was also a Town Clerk in 1675.
The book is no longer governed by copyright laws and the Newtown Historical Society has made the book available for download on their website. Their URL is: Newtown Historical Society It is also available for download on archive.org. I am making the book available here as well. You may do a search for "Ketcham" to skip to all references for John and others in the family. If you don't read all of the book, at least read the part regarding John Ketcham.
