Abstracts from the book "Yesterday Lives Again": page 57-59: "During the years 1829-57, the roster of Crawford County officials is largely composed of people who lived within present bounds of Phelps County. No families were more prominent in local government that the Harrisons, Duncans, Hawkins, Coppedges — who had first come to this area. How well this attests their qualities of intelligence and leadership! They were joined by the families of John Dillon, Benjamin Wishon, Lyle Singleton, and all the Maramec Iron Works families, including those of Samuel Massey, William James, John Hyer, Barnabas and William Arthur, and others. John Hyer was member of the 1875 Constitutional Convention, also represented Crawford County in the State Legislature, 12th and 15th Sessions, 1824-48. Levi Snelson was representative in the 14th Session, 1846. But JOHN DUNCAN, Sr. was Crawford County's very first representative, in the 9th Session of 1836-37. "
"First, however, we record that William Coppedge, the "Deerslayer" Indian racer, the Newburg powder-maker, and the very notable Gasconade-Crawford County assessor — who had so served Gasconade County in 1828 — now so served Crawford County, 1835. We extract from his 1828 taxpayers' list of 416 the following 60 names — of people who in 1828 lived inside or very close to present Phelps County bounds. These were the "First Decade Pioneers": John Adams, James and Barnabas Arthur, William Arthur, Adam and Isaac N. Bradford, William Bradford, James Bates, Isaac Brown, the Benton family (James, Abram, Elijah, Mark (Jr.), Jesse, and Mark, (Sr.), all of "Benton Creek"; Willis O. Bryant, William Bell, George Boulware, Alexander Coppedge, George Coppedge (the man who with John Webber and Edmund W. Bishop named Rolla), the Carter family (John, Zandy, Washington), Robert and Jonathan Clinton (family for which Clinton Iron Bank was named). Alexander Castleman, the Cox family (Joshua Thomas, Mary, Andrew), Lindsey Coppedge and his father William (the powder-maker and assessor), the Duncan family ( John, Sr., Henry, Robert, John, Jr., Burl, Samuel); William Dodds, JAMES HARRISON, William Eton Hawkins (Patriarch of Safe), James and Thomas Johnson, Obadiah Key, George Kitchen, James Luster, Charles Lane (for whom Lane's Prairie was named), DAVID LENOX ("Elder" of Primitive Baptist Church), SAMUEL MASSEY (builder of Maramec Iron Works), Micaijah Morris (who conducted Massey to Maramec), Ellis and Thomas Matlock, Jeremiah Potts, Asa PinneU, James Skaggs, Parmer Sinclair (who cut out the very first road, Maramec to Caledonia), Henry Skaggs, James and Levi Snelson, Isiah Bowen (the skilled millwright-carpenter who planned and bossed erection of framing for first foundry house and buildings at Maramec Iron Works). These were the habitants of our present Phelps County area in the year 1828. We know there were others who were here, but we cannot pick them from the 1828 Coppedge list."
[VICKY'S NOTE: The above two paragraphs mentions several members of the Coppedge family and Isaac Brown. They are related to Elizabeth Arthur via her husband James Brown. Isaac Brown being Elizabeth's father-in-law. James and Barnabas Arthur were William's brothers.]
