John P. Yates
(abt 1779 - 1862)

Sarah Martin
(1800 - Unk.)

John P. Yates was born Abt. 1779 in Virginia, and died 1862. According to a comment by John's grandson, Jeremiah Hudson published in the Pope County, Arkansas History, John was "of old colonial stock". He married Sarah Martin in Tennessee about 1814 and they immediately moved to Wayne County, Tennessee where they lived until in the 1840's when they removed to Pope County, Arkansas. Sarah was born in 1800, the daughter of Samuel Martin.

The 1850 US Census shows John and Sarah living in Pope County, Arkansas. John was 71 years old; Sarah was age 50. Children were: John P. age 19; Absalom age 17; Sarah age 4; and a John P. Tarkington age 6.

John Pryor Yates
(abt. 1832 - April 08, 1862)

Sarah Ann Holmes
(March 8, 1835 - November 02, 1895)

John Pryor Yates was born Abt. 1832 in Tennessee, and died April 08, 1862 in Jacksonport, Jackson County, Arkansas. He married Sarah Ann Holmes 1856 in Pope County, Arkansas, daughter of James Holmes and Mary Polly Denton.

John served three years in the Confederate Army. It was told that when John went to war, he got Gabriel to promise to take care of his family if he didn't come back. On the way home he was bushwacked by Yankees and hung. Sarah then married John's brother, Gabriel Yates in 1865 in Arkansas. Gabriel served in the Mexican War and Sarah received a pension for that service. This is listed in "an Index to Mexican War Pension Applications" transcribed by Barbara Schull Wolfe as Gabriele S & Sarah, Ark, 8/1/1888, C6383.

The 1880 US Census states that Gabriel was 59 years old and living in North Fork, Pope County, Arkansas. His occupation was a Minister. He was married to Sally Yates, age 44; John P. Yates age 13; Abraham age 12; Sarah E. age 11; Polley K. age 6; and E.M. age 16.

Sarah died on November 2, 1895 and is buried in the Fairlawn Cemetery, Comanche, Stephens County, Oklahoma. Gabriel died on December 14, 1881 and is buried in Jones Cemetery, Pope County, Arkansas.
