The Farrell Family

James William Farrell
(January 31, 1860 - July 24, 1933)

Ada Shepherd
(April 09, 1873 - January 01, 1965)

James was born January 31, 1860 in Glascow Barren Co., Kentucky. He was the son of Andrew Farrell and Mary Ellen Rhodes, both of whom died in Randolph, Kentucky. No other information has been found regarding Andrew and Mary Ellen to date except that Andrew died in Randolph, Kentucky.

James married Ada Shepherd on January 18, 1893 in Hunt, Texas. Ada was the daughter of Edward D. Shepherd and Eliza Loretta Young. Ada was born April 09, 1873 in Salisbury, Rowan County, North Carolina.

The 1900 census shows James age 40; born Jan 1860; married 7 years and a writing teacher. The 1910 census shows James is 50; residence Greenville Ward 1, Hunt Co., Texas. The 1920 and 1930 censuses show James and Ada living on a farm in Van Buren, Crawford County, Arkansas. City directories of 1911, 1913, and 1916 show them living at 2211 Stuart, Greenville, Hunt Co., Texas.

James died July 24, 1933 in Van Buren, Crawford County, Arkansas. "The Greenville, (Texas) Messenger", Thu, 27 Jul 1933, page 8, has his obituary as:

         J.W. FARRELL DIED IN ARKANSAS MONDAY
         Prof. J.W. Farrell, long the writing teacher in the Greenville High School, died at his home in Van Buren, Ark., Monday. Prof. Farrell had many friends in Greenville.

Ada died January 01, 1965 in Van Buren, Crawford County, Arkansas. James and Ada are buried in the Alma City Cemetery, Alma, Crawford County.

James and Ada's children are:

1. Velma Ruth Farrell; b. December 13, 1903; d. April 05, 1986; m. Richard Nicholas Tomlinson

3. Lola Farrell
4. Edna Farrell
5. James Farrell
