According to Robert Anthony's brother, James Frederick, Robert volunteered in Colonel Peter Turney's 1st Tenn. Regiment ("The 1st Confederate"), mustered in and left the state in April 1861, before the state seceded. Robert served in all the battles in Virginia, first at Manassas and ending at Gettysburg. He fought in the famous Pickett Charge and lost his left leg above the knee.
