Memories by Melba Cook Van Hoozer

I remember visiting Grannie and Grandad Booth somewhere southeast of Duncan (OK), their home was at the end of a shady lane. I told Daddy I would like to walk the rest of the way so he let me out of the car and went on up the lane. They were barely out of my reach when I saw the biggest world I had never before imagined. Wolves (??) chased me all the way to the house.

Riding the bundle wagon with Grandad was great fun, but I never learned to appreciate the skill of pulling bolles. I had more fun watching Ol' Ring (the dog) kill snakes. I realize now what a great baby sitter Grandad made, under the guise of teaching me to work. Yeah-sure!!

Grannie was a great cook, famous for her wonderful four layered coconut cakes at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Equally memorable were the red beans with thick soup she put on to cook for dinner as she prepared breakfast. Her homemade (daily) biscuits were out of this world, specially with sugar and butter from her ICE box.

Never in my lifetime do I remember my grandmother raising her voice or speaking to anyone in anger. The strongest I remember is when she spoke to a bunch of us grand kids (probably Bill Shults, Wynemia Booth and myself). She said "now children let's just play pretty" in the gentlest voice we will ever hear. One fine lady my Granny Booth.
